All I’ve got to say is…FINALLY! As much as I enjoy the other seasons, nothing beats summer to me. The long days of sunlight, the warmth of the sun on my skin, sleeping with the windows wide open, swimming in lakes and beaches…nothing compares to me. I also love summer because the foods that I am most drawn to are in season. I absolutely love and look forward to planting my vegetable and herb gardens, and find that to be such a huge meditation tool for me. It’s my best favorite form of therapy-getting out there and working in the earth.
The vegetables and fruits that are produced during this season are soo fragrant, colorful, vibrant, and full of the necessary nutrients we need for our bodies to function optimally during these hot months. Once again, Mother Nature wins, as she knows what we need for each season to survive.
The foods that we see in abundance, (and on sale!) this time of year are hydrating, sweet, and cooling foods. They contain minerals and nutrients that are vital to replenishing our stores as we sweat throughout the season. Watermelon, for example, is 92% water, and contains potassium, which helps balance fluid in your cells. It also contains plentiful amounts of vitamins B6, C, and A. Cucumbers are also a fantastic summer vegetable, as they are also full of water, making them hydrating, and they also contain a high amount of silica-which is vital for healthy skin. I like to consume lots of cucumbers in the summer, not only for their cooling properties, but also because they help my skin stay healthy, after spending lots of time in the sun.
Below is a list of some, not all of the fruits and vegetables that are in season now (for the Northeast) that you’ll be seeing lots of this summer, stock up, and let nature do it’s thang for you this season:
- bell pepper
- butter lettuce (and most lettuce varieties)
- summer squash
- tomato (I’ve always considered it a veg!)
- grape tomatoes
- green beans
- jalapeno peppers
- yukon gold potatoes
- honeydew melon
- lemon verbena
